Thesis: Camp Queer

Horror, along with other genres of sinister themes have reinforced a sense of queerness for decades. From literature such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula to the Child’s Play series featuring Chucky, horror has been a subversive genre for practices of inherently strange behavior. Like most misunderstood villains, queer people navigate the world with great stress of being assumed abnormal.

Camp Queer investigates the intersections of LGBTQIA+ references within the genre of horror through photographic images and experimental videos. Inspired by the works of Joel-Peter Witkin and Cindy Sherman’s Sex Pictures, my work distorts aspects of identity that question perspectives. By discussing themes of trauma through different mediums, I aim to raise awareness to the ongoing violence against members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
