Pelo Malo, 2024

The series examines the cultural connection of hair. The term “pelo malo (bad hair),” stems from oppressive identity politics in Latin America that actively criticize people with textured hair. The series investigates the similarities in colorism and politics of hair between the black community and Latinx community. The photographs combine vibrant colors and cultural references to critique the underlying racism in Spanish-speaking communities while also celebrating curls and textured hair.
